Choose one EMDR target

EMDR works best when you choose one specific moment, trigger, image, thought, or body response for today. You do not need to explain your whole history.

What makes a useful target?

Choose something you can describe in one or two sentences and notice in the present. Start with the moment that returns, the situation that activates you, or the body response you want to understand.

Target examples

  • A recent interaction that left you feeling rejected, unsafe, or ashamed.
  • A memory fragment, image, sound, or body sensation that keeps returning.
  • A phobia or anxiety trigger, such as driving, conflict, crowds, or medical settings.
  • An urge, grief moment, shutdown pattern, or repeating thought.
  • A specific belief that appears during the trigger, such as “I am unsafe” or “I cannot handle this.”

Choose one target that feels workable today. If several come up, write them down and select the one that feels most present or most manageable.
